The In's and Out's of Pre-Owned Domain Names
I don't know about you, but sometimes it seems like all of the best domain names have already been taken. On more than one occasion, I've come up with a great domain name for a site, only to find that someone else had already purchased it. I can live with that, but sometimes I've found that it has been purchased by some scum domain scavenger, and that's really annoying.

Benefits of a Dedicated Server
Hosting your web sites on your own dedicated server may seem a little expensive in comparison to shared web hosting, but the end result is more advantageous. Shared web hosting, no matter how well managed, cannot be 100% reliable and stable. However if you have your own dedicated server you can manage to avoid most of the variables affecting the reliability and stability of a server, commonly experienced by shared hosting accounts; variables such as: overload, bad codes and scripts from other users (especially beginners); and, too many applications and components uploaded, and so on.

Registering domain names
A domain name makes your website unique. It gives it a name of it's own. A domain name looks good on your business card. A good domain name spells out "I'm a serious website" and "I'm a serious business

Evolution of the Web Hosting Industry
The evolution of industries contains four basic stages: introduction, growth, mature and decline. There has been considerable research done on the subject, but rarely do we see written material specifically addressing the stages as they apply to a specific industry. I would like to briefly look at the web hosting industry, trying to identify the value drivers and how they change, the signs of change from one stage to another, and each stakeholder's interest and how their value changes from stage to stage.

Evaluating hosts' trustworthiness
Hosts' trustworthiness, first and foremost can be established by finding out what their clients say about them. As I already explained in another article, credible customer opinions can be found at web hosting forums and a few, but just a few, hosting directories. While reviews made by customers are certainly the most important source of information, there are a few other things that can help in creating a more complete image about a host.

Web Hosting Directories explained - the good and the bad
Web hosting directories list web hosting companies. The purpose for creating such lists is different, depending on which side of the fence you are. In 99% of the cases, from the owner's point of view, the directory's purpose is to generate revenue. Sure, that's not what the owner would to tell you if you'd ask directly, but that's the truth anyway.

Server load - just a number?
Well, yes, basically the server load is a number. This number is usually under the x.xx format and can have values starting from 0.00. It expresses how may processes are waiting in the queue to access the processor(s). Of course, this is calculated for a certain period of time and of course, the smaller the number, the better. A high number is often associated with a decrease in the performance of the server.

Monitoring server uptime
Most people stop here forgetting about one small but very important detail. If you are really serious about your website, or if your website is serious in nature (it's a business website), you should keep an eye on your host at all times. It's not enough to verify daily if your website is up. To be really certain that your website is up most of the time, you should monitor server uptime in a serious manner. That way you can not only claim compensation if the host does not meet the guaranteed uptime (in case the hosting company had such a guarantee in place) but you'll know when the website is down.

Presales questions and purchasing hosting
As you might know by now, when making buying decisions I value very much the information coming from people outside of the hosting company (namely customers), my main reasoning being that, in order to close the sale, a company's sales representative might conceal things or even lie.

Hosts search strategy
The search for web hosting reviews is a very important (if not the most important) part of your whole web hosting shopping strategy. Shopping for hosting is not exactly easy because today's hosting offer is very-very vast. It is huge! There are thousands of bigger and smaller web hosting companies. And there are cheap, not-so-cheap and expensive web hosting services.
